Louisville Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Services began as a private specialty & emergency referral practice in 1998 with the same goal you have: to provide the best care possible for the pet, ensuring optimal outcomes to facilitate a longer and healthier life.
In so doing, we have expanded our services, technology and staff over the years to reflect the advances in veterinary medicine. By offering a full complement of multi-disciplinary specialists and diagnostics, LVSES can expand the scope of your practice. We fully recognize that as a primary care veterinarian you understand your patient’s needs better than anyone. And sometimes those needs require that you utilize a specialist. By collaborating, we can give your clients and patients options, as well as the highest level of medical care.

Because we are a 24/7 facility, emergency services are available for your patients with or without a referral. Patients can be seen by one of our emergency clinicians 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays. This includes emergency evaluation and surgery, if necessary. We urge you to call us before your client transports an emergency case. Having information about an animal’s condition and estimated time of arrival aids our ability to provide prompt and appropriate treatment. In the event that your client brings the pet to LVSES without your referral, we will make every effort to send you a faxed update regarding the case, just as we do when you refer the patient as an emergency.
When your patient is examined at LVSES, you will receive a faxed update regarding the case. A copy of the discharge instructions will be faxed upon your patient's release. In addition, we will try to notify you regarding any major change in your patient's condition.
To assure quality of care, the LVSES nursing staff is not authorized to give patient medical information to referring veterinarians or owners. If a request for an update is made by an owner during a patient’s stay, the nursing staff will be able to relay basic parameters (appetite, comfort, etc). However, only the specialty or attending doctor can speak to a referring veterinarian about case details.
As a service to referring veterinarians, complimentary telephone consultations with LVSES specialists are available during normal business hours, Monday through Friday. The specialists will make every effort to speak with you when you call. However, if they are unable to do so, your call will be returned as soon as possible.
LVSES offers an ongoing CE program we call our DVM Lunch n’ Learn Series for referring veterinarians. Please check our Continuing Education link above or on the main page for more information.
