The Cardiology service diagnosis and treats diseases of the cardiovascular system. This includes:

• Congenital congestive heart failure
• Hypertension
• Cardiomyopathy
• Valvular disorders.
   

Because the function of the heart and lungs are interrelated, veterinary cardiologists are also knowledgeable about lung and chest cavity diseases. This type of specialist has obtained intensive additional training in veterinary cardiology.

There are many types of heart disease in dogs and cats. Certain breeds are also prone to congenital, or acquired heart disease. Early detection and treatment of heart disease and other cardiovascular problems can help slow the course of the disease and allow your pet a very high quality of life. Studies have shown that many pets with heart disease are asymptomatic.  Your pet may become suddenly ill or show signs of the following that require immediate attention:

• Shortness of breath or apparent difficulty in breathing
  (due to fluid in the lungs or chest cavity)
• Weakness or collapse
• Fast breathing while resting  (don’t confuse this with normal panting)
• Sudden loud vocal cries from cats
• Sudden paralysis in cats
• Cough or respiratory difficulty
• Heartworm disease
• Heart murmur or abnormal heart sounds
• Exercise intolerance
• Abnormal cardiac rhythm
